Mrs. Ruby Ayres Calhoun, 100 ½ of Buchanan, gained her heavenly wings on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. Mrs. Ruby was born on July 25, 1919, on a farm in Troup County to James Abram Ayres and Lucille Colley Ayres. She was a graduate of West Point High School, and she married the love of her life, Charles Bryan Calhoun, on November 3, 1940.
This extraordinary Southern lady loved her family, her church, and her community. She and C.B. raised 3 sons, and she was G-momma to her loving grandchildren. Mrs. Ruby was a devoted member of the Buchanan United Methodist Church, where she was a long-term treasurer, member of the Women’s Sunday School Class, and member of the United Methodist Women. Being active in her community, she was a member of the Buchanan Women’s Club for many years.
Mrs. Calhoun is predeceased by her parents; her husband, C.B Calhoun; one brother, James A. Ayres, Jr.; and two sisters, Mae Ayres Hammock and Elsie Ayres.
Those left to cherish her memories include three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Rebecca Calhoun of Tallapoosa; Cary and Lane Calhoun of Bremen; and Bill and Wanda Calhoun of Carrollton. Remembering her strength and love are grandchildren, Bryan Calhoun, James Calhoun, Mark Calhoun, Rob and Elizabeth Calhoun, Paul and Leah Calhoun, David and Crystal Calhoun, Caroline Calhoun, Maggie Chewning, Katie Chewning, and Ross Chewning.
