Roy Lee Worthy, age 95, of Tallapoosa, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. He was born on December 4, 1925, in Buchanan to the late Newt Worthy and the late Mollie Williams Worthy. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Edna Brown Worthy, whom he had loved since the third grade. He was also preceded in death by ten of his siblings: Lucius Worthy, Mandy Gardiner, Chalmus Worthy, Henry Worthy, James Worthy, Pearl McDowell, Carl Worthy, Charles Worthy, and infants Louise and Willie Faye Worthy.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis Bates of Buchanan and Freida and Randy Redden of Tallapoosa; one sister and brother-in-law, Hattie Bell and J. W. Brown; one brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Barbara Worthy; four granddaughters and spouses, Kim Hammond, Kada and Robin Morris, Randa and John Smith, and Misty and Dennis Price; six great grandchildren, Brianne and Jeremy Church, Brandi and Brandon Parker, Aiden, Cason, and Kolton Price, and Jackson Smith; great-great grandchildren Micajah and Magnolia Church and Nolan Parker expected to arrive in February; as well as many other relatives and friends.
After working as a fabric cutter for forty-seven years, Mr. Worthy retired from Goodyear in Rockmart. He went on to work as a custodian at Buchanan Elementary school for several years. He loved interacting with the teachers and students. After retiring from the school, he was able to pursue his love of landscaping, often helping his neighbors maintain their lawns. His immaculate yard and flower beds received many compliments from friends and neighbors. He and Edna had a great love for visiting the Great Smoky Mountains, making several trips each year. He felt so blessed to get to go once more this past October with family.
He was a beloved husband, Daddy, and Papa who was loved by everyone who knew him. He was a hard-working man who lived a simple, quiet life devoted to God and his family. He was a foot-washing Baptist deacon who will be remembered for his humble, spirit-filled prayers and testimonies. Ever a kind and loving man, he walked the narrow way as he looked to the hills from whence cometh all his help. Now that he’s closed his eyes in death and laid his hands upon his chest, we’ll sing for him a pretty song while he makes his journey home.
