Ollie "Melvin" Jones, age 83 of Rockmart, passed away Monday, September 18, 2023, in a local hospital. Born in Polk County on April 26, 1940, he was the son of the late Ollie Vivian Jones and the late Frances Odessa Grime Jones. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Ella Harrell Jones. his three sons, Randall Jones, James Jones, and Gerald Jones; his sister, Sara Jo Merritt; his brothers Walter Jones and William "Buck" Jones; and a grandson, Wayne Agan.
Melvin was a jokester and a people watcher. He enjoyed watching westerns and sitting on his porch and counting cars. He couldn't wait to tell you how many cars came by his house each day. Making people laugh was Melvin's gift and he was ready to share that gift with anyone, but especially with those who called him Daddy and Pawpaw. His passion was spending time with his family and he will be dearly missed.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughters and son-in-law; Frances & Cliff Brown of Bremen; Wanda Browning of Buchanan, and Brenda Jones of Buchanan; his daughters-in-law, Janice Jones of Rockmart and Melissa Jones of Aragon; his sister and brother-in-law, Lynn & Danny Bailey of Rockmart; and his brother, Glynn Jones of Rockmart. Also surviving are 17 precious grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great- great grandchild; as well as a number of nieces and nephews and other family members.
Funeral services for Melvin Jones will be conducted on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 2:00 PM from Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel with Rev. Shane Wade and Rev. Earl Wigley officiating. Interment will follow in the Hills Creek Church Cemetery in Taylorsville, GA, with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Jeremy Ward, Mitchell Ward, Sammy Sparks, Paul Bell, Chris Dawson, and Randy Priest.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 5;00 PM until 8:00 PM.
