William Melvin Reeves, Jr, age 82 of Buchanan, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lamar County, Alabama, on March 22, 1941, he was the son of the late William Melvin Reeves, Sr. and the late Mamie Woods Reeves. In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by his brother, Herschel Reeves, and the love of his life, his wife, Jackie Lovelace Reeves, to whom he was married on June 11, 1961.
A 1964 graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Education, Melvin taught Social Studies, Physical Education, and enjoyed coaching basketball for many years. Later he completed his 6th year Specialist Degree at Georgia State University in Administration. He served as the Fayette County High School Principal from 1973 - 1983. Then in the summer of 1983, Melvin and his family moved to Haralson County where he served for many years as the Haralson County High School Principal and was later appointed Superintendent of the Haralson County School System. He had many gifts and talents and one was mentoring youth and young adults. Fishing was Melvin's favorite pastime. He was a family man who loved his family with a passion. He also loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Bremen.
Left to cherish his memories are his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Melodye Reeves; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ricky Pruitt; six grandchildren: Brittany and Brandon Smith, Sara Beth and Bige Smith, Amanda and Erik Fry, Natalie and Kyle Lewis, Lauren and Matt McCammon, and Josh and Kristine Reeves; nineteen precious great-grandchildren with more on the way, niece (thought of as a sister) Cynthia Ann Reeves of Vernon, AL, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Melvin Reeves will be conducted on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM from the First Baptist Church in Bremen with Rev. Brent Reeves and Rev. Hunter Roe officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery in Buchanan with Jacob Stewart presiding. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Bill Heath, Preston Williamson, Kyle Williamson, Felton Oliver, Trigg Dalrymple, Brandon Smith, Bige Smith, and Winn Prescott. Honorary pallbearers will be the First Baptist Church Men's Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church in Bremen on Monday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 PM and then on Tuesday morning one hour prior to the funeral.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers and to honor dad's love of youth, memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Building Fund, 331 Pacific Avenue, Bremen, GA 30110.
