Mary Ann Wood Weatherby, age 88 of Buchanan, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022, in a local hospital. She was born on May 8, 1934, to the late Waymon E. Wood and the late Annice Wells Wood. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers Hugh "Rip' Wood, Jimmy Statham, and Royce Statham.
Mary Ann was a proud 1953 graduate of Buchanan High School. In the mid 1950's she began her career in county government working as a Deputy Clerk under then Superior Court Clerk T.W. McClendon. Upon Weldon's decision to retire from the Clerk's office, Mary Ann announced her intention to run for the office and thus began her long career in county politics. Her first political campaign began in 1972, and she was sworn in as Superior Court Clerk in 1973. She continued in that role for six terms, serving the citizens of Haralson County from 1973 until her retirement in 1996. However, she did not leave the courthouse, as she remained on as a Deputy Clerk for several years, serving under Clerks, JoAnn Hutcheson, Phyllis Southern, and Becky Abbott. For more than 50 years, Mary Ann worked in the Haralson County Courthouse helping anyone who needed her. She was a member of the Retired Superior Court Clerks Association. After her retirement, she enjoyed working in her yard and loved caring for her lillies and roses.
Survivors include her husband Chalmus E. Weatherby, to whom she was married December 13, 1952, a sister, June Addison of Felton; and a brother J.E. Statham of Azle, TX;. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services for Mary Ann Weatherby will be conducted Thursday, November 10, 2022, at 2:00 PM from Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel with the Honorable Judge Eddie Hulsey presiding. The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home from Noon until the funeral hour. Interment will follow at a later date at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests do nations to the Haralson County Historical Society.
