Jack Cottingham Sims

Mr. Jack Cottingham Sims, age 88, of Buchanan, GA, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.  Mr. Sims was born September 1, 1931, just outside Milltown, AL, to Admiral Dewey Sims and Lella Cunningham Sims.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Nan Gillenwaters.

Mr. Sims served courageously in the U.S. Army and was enlisted during the Korean War.  He attended and received his bachelors degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now known as Auburn University, and received his masters degree from Georgia State.  Mr. Sims was retired from the Haralson County School System where he taught for several years and in later years was the Haralson County High School Vocational Supervisor.  Jack was known for his firm discipline, but also for his care and concern for the students. He was a member of the Buchanan United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Ramona Edge Sims, his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Jolaine Sims, all of Buchanan; his grandson and wife, Chad and Jennifer Sims of Winder, GA, and his great-grandson, Jackson Sims.  Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Mildred Sims of Louisville, KY, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Jack Sims will be conducted at 11 am on Friday, October 25, 2019, from the chapel of Hutcheson’s Memorial Chapel & Crematory in Buchanan, with Pastor Alan Sims, Mr. Jerry Hall, and Rev. Randy Rooks officiating.  Music will be furnished by Mrs. Beleta Anderson, Kersha Cartwright, and Kiley Thompson.  Interment will follow in the family plot in the Wadley City Cemetery in Wadley, AL, at 2:30 pm Alabama (Central Standard) time. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers:  George Baltzegar, Johnny Bollen, Jim Griffith, Scott Roberts, Sam Edge, Randy Pate, Jerry Hall, Jim Hall, John Hall, and Jeff Hall.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, October 24, from 6 until 8 pm.  Flowers are welcome, but the family asks that monetary donations be made to Buchanan United Methodist Church in memory of Jack Sims, PO Box 342, Buchanan, GA  30113
