Carolyn Jean Word Payton, age 80 of Buchanan, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2020. She was born February 18, 1940 in Cleburne County, AL to the late Elbert Dean Word and the late Francis Ruth Brown Taylor. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Eugene Payton; son Clay Payton; two sisters, Joanne Esposito and Linda Steinhalber.
Survivors include two daughters, Melody Parks of Buchanan and Victoria R. and Ethan Hutson of Camp Lejune, NC; one son, Jon C. Payton of Buchanan; three sisters, Teresa and Mike Stephenson of Cedartown, Sandra and David Pike of Rockmart and Deborah Colandrea of New York; four brothers, Randy and Joyce Taylor of Temple, Ronnie and Dondra Taylor of Muscadine, AL, Robert Word of California and Roger Word of New York; six grandchildren, Neil Ward, Molly Parks, Blake Payton, Jessica Payton McCarty, Carys Hutson and Laira Hutson; great grandchildren, Spencer Ward, Sunny Ward, Cheyenne Parks, Gabriel Lane, Lily Baxter, Isaac McCarty, Christian Payton and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 20, 2020 at 2:00 PM from Covenant Life with Brother John Butler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 Noon until the service hour.
In keeping with Mrs. Payton’s wishes she will be cremated after the service.
The family requests for flowers to be potted or silk.
