Billy Gene Higgins, age 88 of Tallapoosa, passed away in a local hospital on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Eastaboga, Alabama, on October 22, 1935, he was the son of the late Revy Ezekiel Higgins and the late Flora Lee Higgins. In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Ray Higgins; a son, Tommy Ray, two sisters, Frankie Owens and Denny Dunn; and four brothers, Cecil Higgins, Audrey Higgins, Revy Lee Higgins, Jr, and Glen Higgins.
After graduating high school, Billy proudly served in the United States Army and was discharged in 1966. He was a hard worker, but also enjoyed his leisure time. In earlier years, Billy could be found rabbit hunting with his friends or working his bee hives. He always had a big garden and shared his bounty with others. When a sporting event was on TV, Billy was not to be disturbed. He loved his Lord and was a member of Westview Baptist Church.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Ogretta Abercrombie Higgins; his children, Billie and Frank Wright of Carrollton and Bobby and Joan Ray of Waco and a sister, Helen Higgins Parker of Oxford, AL. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Scott and Jessica Wright, Robert and Connie Ray, and Patrick and Amy Ray; great-grandchildren: Neyland Wright, Oaklynn Wright, Paxton Ray, and Parker Ray; as well as other extended family members and many friends.
Funeral services for Billy Higgins will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 9, 2024, from the Westview Baptist Church in Tallapoosa with Rev. Kevin McAdams and Rev. Alton Stamey officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with Brother Tommy Allen presiding.
