William Joseph Skidmore, affectionately known as Uncle Billy Joe, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023. Born in Haralson County on July 31, 1935, he was the son of the late Albert B. Skidmore, Sr. and the late Kate Bush Skidmore. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Darlene Turner Skidmore who passed away April 2011, his sister, Elizabeth Louise Skidmore Griffith and his brother Albert B. Skidmore, Jr.
Billy grew up in the area of Bushmill which was named after his great -grandfather Bush. After completing high school, he proudly served in the United States Army. Due to his mathematical ability, his final Army assignment was Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he was on an Honest John Rocket unit. Returning home he worked many years in Quality Control for Southwire where he retired. In his leisure time, Billy enjoyed fishing with wife and was a talented guitar player, even playing with a band at one time. Billy was a proud member of the Bark Busters Black Powder Gun Club and was also a member of Liberty Christian Church.
Survivors include his niece, Sharon L. Griffith; and his nephews, Marc & Lisa Griffith, Mike & Tessie Griffith, and Joe & Linda Couch.
A funeral service for William J. Skidmore will be conducted graveside at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM with Minister Bill Gray officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Haralson County Veteran's Association. Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn.
