Willard Clarence Bates, Jr., a devoted patriot, skilled craftsman, and cherished family man, passed away on June 14, 2026, at the age of 67. Born on February 2, 1959, in Atlanta, he was the son of the late Willard Clarence Bates, Sr. and the late Tommie Jean Quinn Bates. J.R. grew up and spent most of his life in Marietta, Georgia, moving to Alabama a few years ago.
A proud veteran, J.R. joined the United States Marines at the young age of 17 in 1976, serving his nation with honor and commitment. His patriotic spirit was a defining characteristic throughout his life, reflected in both his values and his everyday actions. He found great joy in the world of construction, applying his talents and passion to creating and building. In his younger years, J.R. delighted in playing the guitar and singing. Among Willard’s proudest accomplishments were his mission trip with his church to Costa Rica and his dedicated service helping with the food bank at Redemption Baptist Church. Later in life, he also took pleasure in playing slot machines at his local convenience store, a pastime that brought him simple moments of happiness and community. He will be remembered with deep respect and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Family was at the heart of Willard's life. He leaves behind his daughters Brandy (Michael Cook) Bates of Roopville and Sarah Shannon of Bowdon; his sons Will Bates of Bowdon and Thomas (Jessyca) Bates of Atlanta; and his sisters, Brenda (Dion) Moore of Heflin and Renee (Rocky) Pollard of Graham. Also mourning his loss are his grandson, Josh Shannon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
