Shirley Jean Wright Owens, age 80 of Buchanan, passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at her residence.  Born in Carroll County on August 2, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Buford and Maizel Skinner Wright.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gary Dale Owens, a great grandchild, Gannan Ray, and three brothers, Jim Wright, Doc Wright, and William Wright.

Shirley was an industrious woman who worked at US Can for more than 40 years.  She was the first female there to run a press machine.  She also believed in working hard at home and she enjoyed taking care of her family and others. She welcomed people into her home when they had no where to go, and she graciously gave many rides to those without transportation.  Her family was her passion and she loved spending time with them and cooking for them. She will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Mervin Owens; her daughter, Brenda Williams of Fruithurst; her grandchildren, Chris (Amanda) Owens, Ashley Mott, Brittany Owens, Allyson (Michael) Barber, and Madyson Williams; her sister, Linda Slade of Waco; and her brothers, Roger Wright of Heflin and Thomas Wright of Tallapoosa.  Also surviving are her precious great-grandchildren, Amberly Owens, Christopher Owens, Zoe Owens, Brantley Mott, Daniel Mott, Wyatt Mott, Cayden Ray, Kenslie Ray,  Lily Ray, and Paislee Barber, as well as other family members.

Funeral services for Shirley Owens will be conducted Monday, December 18, 2023, at 2:00 PM from Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel with Pastor Drew Bailey officiating.  Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion West Cemetery in Tallapoosa.

The family will receive friends on Monday at the funeral home from Noon until the funeral hour.
