Mr. Norman Elbert Griffin, age 87, of Cayce, SC passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2011. Mr. Griffin was born in Felton on November 13, 1923. He was the son of the late Freddie Dawson Griffin and the late Nervie Addison Griffin. Mr. Griffin graduated from Buchanan High School in 1940 and was a Veteran of World War II. He served as a Tech Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force, flew 35 combat missions as a radio operator and aerial gunner in the B-24 Heavy Bombers, 15th Air Force in Italy. Mr. Griffin was a member of State Street Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. After 43 years of service, he retired as Train Master for Norfolk Southern Railway in 1984. He was a member for over 60 years of the Caledonia Lodge #121 F. & A.M. and R.A.M. Adoniram Lodge #41 of Cedartown and was a member of the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant daughters, Debra and Susan; three sisters, Ethel Griffin, Gladys Tubbs and Frances Schrieber; three brothers, Gerald Griffin, Billy Griffin and Johnny Griffin. Survivors include his wife, LaJean Griffin; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Mike Derrick; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Wendy Griffin; one sister, Willie Katherine Bentley; two brothers, Marvin Griffin and Charles Griffin; three grandchildren, Nathan Griffin, Trey Derrick and Travis Derrick. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. form Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, 2549 Shorter Ave., Rome, GA 30165. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Hutcheson''s Memorial Chapel & Crematory of Buchanan is in charge of the arrangements.
