Mervin F. Owens, age 82 of Buchanan, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2025, after a brief illness. Born on November 26, 1943, in Cleburne County, Alabama, he was the son of the late Albert Lee Owens and the late Maybelle Denny Owens. In addition to his parents, Mervin is preceded in death by wife, Shirley Wright Owens; his son, Gary Dale Owens; and a great grandchild, Gannon Ray.
A graduate of Cleburne County High School, Mervin distinguished himself with perfect attendance throughout all 12 years of his education, a testament to his commitment and dependability. He furthered his education by attending college for two years before meeting and marrying the love of his life, Shirley. Mervin devoted over two decades to Stoffel Seals, serving as Warehouse Manager with unwavering dedication. Even after retirement, he continued his work journey at Southwire in transportation, demonstrating his strong work ethic and passion for staying active.
Known for his humble and straightforward nature, Mervin was truly a simple man who found joy in the everyday blessings of life. He was an avid outdoorsman, delighting in hunting, fishing, and tending to his vegetable garden. A gifted gardener with a green thumb, Mervin grew beautiful roses. Besides his outdoor passions, he enjoyed watching Hallmark movies. Mervin was also a devoted fan of Georgia Bulldog football, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Atlanta Braves. Above all else, Mervin took immense pride in his role as a Pawpaw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was the center of his heart, and his legacy lives on through the love and values he imparted to them.
Left to cherish her memories are his daughter, Brenda Williams of Fruithurst; and his grandchildren, Chris (Amanda) Owens, Ashley (Chip) Moore, Brittany Owens, Allyson (Michael) Barber, and Madyson Williams. Also surviving are his precious great-grandchildren, Amberly Owens, Christopher Owens, Zoe Owens, Brantley Mott, Daniel Mott, Wyatt Mott, Adaleigh Moore, Cayden Ray, Kenslie Ray, Lily Ray, Jadon Kidd Paislee Barber, and Madalyn Barber, as well as extended family and friends.
Funeral services for Mervin Owens will be conducted at 5:00 PM on Monday, April 20, 2026, at Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel with Reverend Homer Wysner officiating. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Zion West Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Chris Owens, Randall Slade, Michael Barber, Brantley Mott, Christopher Owens, and Steven Rush.
The family will receive friends on Monday at the funeral home from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM.
