Mr. Walton graduated from Rockville High School and Smithdeal-Massey  Business College in Virginia and earned an Associates Degree in Applied Science from Rowan Community College, Salisbury, NC.  Joe started his railroad career at the RFP, then to Southern Railway, and retired from Norfolk Southern as Asst. Joe, affectionately called "Poppa Joe", was loved, adored, and respected by wife Cheryl's family and neighbors.  He enjoyed sitting by the camp fires, talking NASCAR, doing woodwork and especially building birdhouses. He loved giving away birdhouses with college insignias to his friends and doctors.   Joe and Cheryl loved traveling in their motorhome, seeing and playing golf through out  the country and meeting new friends.

As Joe continued his battle with cancer, he developed a sweet, spiritual demeanor, was loving, kind, and generous to his family, neighborhood friends, and little children,

On his bucket list was a race car called "Poppa Joe Racing", painted bright orange, and on the back panel was written "Cancer Sucks" .Joe lived to see it race once.  His beloved son-in-law Jason and Joe's special neighborhood "pit crew" promised him that they would continue racing in his name to make people aware of prostate cancer.
