March 19, 1940 – January 6, 2016
Joseph Libsey Walton III of Buchanan, Georgia, age 76, passed away January 6, 2016 after an eight year battle with prostate cancer.
Services to be held January 16, 2016 11:00 A.M. at Calvary Christian Church, Glen Allen, VA. After a celebratory family meal, a private interment will be held at the Walton's Cemetery.
Joe is survived by his wife of eleven years, Cheryl Cannon Walton and their beloved Boykin Spaniels, Josie and Jaycee and Cheryl's two sons, seven grandchildren, and two great grandkids.
His surviving siblings in the Glen Allen, VA area are Norman and Betty Walton, Merle and Joe Patterson, and Brenda and Perk Walls.
Joe was preceded in death by Sandra Leedy Walton and grandson Andrew Hare, They were the parents of Joseph L Walton IV of Villa Rica, GA, his wife Susan and grandaughter Jennifer; a daughter Sheri Lynn Hare, her husband John and grandson Wade of Portland, OR
Mr. Walton graduated from Rockville High School and Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Virginia and earned an Associates Degree in Applied Science from Rowan Community College, Salisbury, NC. Joe started his railroad career at the RFP, then to Southern Railway, and retired from Norfolk Southern as Asst. Chief Engineer, Communications and Signals in 1995.
Joe, affectionately called "Poppa Joe", was loved, adored, and respected by wife Cheryl's family and neighbors. He enjoyed sitting by the camp fires, talking NASCAR, doing woodwork and especially building birdhouses. He loved giving away birdhouses with college insignias to his friends and doctors. Joe and Cheryl loved traveling in their motorhome, seeing and playing golf through out the country and meeting new friends.
As Joe continued his battle with cancer, he developed a sweet, spiritual demeanor, was loving, kind, and generous to his family, neighborhood friends, and little children,
On his bucket list was a race car called "Poppa Joe Racing", painted bright orange, and on the back panel was written "Cancer Sucks" .Joe lived to see it race once. His beloved son-in-law Jason and Joe's special neighborhood "pit crew" promised him that they would continue racing in his name to make people aware of prostate cancer.
