James Lamar Bowen, age 79 of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Born in Gadsden, Alabama, on August 17, 1946, he was the son of the late Ancil Varnell Bowen and the late Mary Evelyn Green Bowen. In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his brothers Johnny, Tommy, Eddie and Raymond.
James was a dedicated public servant and beloved father whose life was marked by service, creativity, and a profound love for nature and family. Mr. Bowen proudly served in the United States Army in the Special Forces as a Green Beret, achieving the rank of Sergeant before his retirement. His commitment to duty continued beyond the military when he spent several years as a police officer. Following his law enforcement career, he embraced another calling in education, retiring as a teacher from Cherokee County Schools. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Secondary Education. Known for his skilled craftsmanship, James was a talented builder of homes, and his artistic spirit flourished through drawing and designing. James also loved football and was an avid Georgia fan. A devoted outdoorsman, he found joy in exploring nature, hunting for arrowheads, fishing, and traveling. Shopping was another of his simple pleasures whether shopping for himself or others. James will be remembered with respect and admiration by all who knew and loved him.
James leaves behind a cherished family that includes his daughter Brianna and her husband Doug Turner of Buchanan; his sons Neil Bowen of Austell, and Nathan Bowen with his wife Anna Marie of Powder Springs. He was a proud grandfather to Irene, Justin, Willem & Iris, Thij, DeLana, Junior, William, Arianna, Christopher, and Emily and especially proud to be a great-grandfather to Madelyn and Morgan.
In keeping with his wishes, James will be cremated.
