Mr. J. Mac Griffith, age 88, of Buchanan passed away Friday morning, June 16, 2017 at his residence surrounded by family. Mr. Griffith was born in Fort Gaines, Georgia, on August 12, 1928. He was the son of the late Jim Frank Griffith and the late Apphia West Griffith. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Donald Carlton Griffith, one brother, Frank West Griffith, and one sister, Ann Griffith Shannon Saffer.
Mac Griffith, devoted to public service and his community, was a long-time active member of the Buchanan United Methodist Church where he held many leadership positions. Additionally, he was a 4-H Adult Leader for many years, a Boy Scout Master for twenty two years where he received the "Silver Beaver" award in 1973 for distinguished services by the Atlanta Area Council, and a Buchanan Jaycee for which he received the Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Griffith was a devout Rebel fan and was a member of the Haralson County Booster Club since its origin in 1968 where he served two terms as president. He was also one of the founders of the Buchanan Development Corporation and served as its president for ten years.
Mac loved the outdoors and spent much of his life committed to the development, care, and cultivation of agriculture. He retired from the United States Department of Agriculture ASCS office in Buchanan and also served for twenty years in the United States Navy Reserves.
He ran a cattle farm with his sons and was a member of the Haralson County Cattlemen's Association and Haralson County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Ann Stribling Griffith of Buchanan; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Jim and Debra Griffith of Bremen, Joe and Tracey Griffith of Buchanan, and Beleta Anderson of Tallapoosa; six grandchildren, Kersha Cartwright, Megan Hatchett, Kiley Thompson, Abby McKenzie, Taylor Griffith, and Bain Griffith; ten great grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 18, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. from Buchanan United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Rooks, Rev. Hoyt Jenkins, Rev. Hugh Peacock, Mr. Bernard Whitton and Rev. Jason Hatchett officiating. Music will be rendered by the grandchildren, Beleta Anderson, and Dora Gable. Interment will follow in Buchanan City Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Jonah Hatchett, Jake Thompson, Wade Cartwright, Taylor Griffith, Bain Griffith, Wesley McKenzie, and David Thompson.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
