Obituary

Mrs. Frances Rowell Newman, age 82, of Buchanan passed away Wednesday, November 10. 2010. Mrs. Newman was born in Haralson County on June 28, 1928. She was the daughter of the late D.E. Rowell and the late Elizabeth Barnwell Rowell. Mrs. Newman was retired from the United States Department of Agriculture. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Buchanan and enjoyed dressing as a clown and making people laugh. Mrs. Newman had also been active in the Red Hat Ladies. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Newman; one son, Steve Newman; one sister, Claudene Rowell; two brothers, Floyd Rowell and Cecil Rowell. Frances was raised on a farm north of Bremen in a farm house that had no running water or electricity. She did her school work by lamp light until her teens. She carried a slice of red beet in a biscuit for lunch while walking to a one room schoolhouse as a child. At seventeen she married J.C. Newman at the end of World War II after dating four weeks. She lived all her married life in Buchanan while working and raising two sons. She always wanted to live within the sound of the old courthouse clock. Her life spanned a wondrous era from horse and wagon, the space age (they go no business up there) to the present. She was a great cook, a loving mother not only to her two sons, but many Vietnam veterans. And, she always brought a smile and a laugh to all around her. Survivors include one son, Barry Newman of Buchanan; and a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will conducted Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. from First Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Posey and Dr. Allen Wilburn officiating. Music will be rendered by Rev. Buddy Gentry. Interment will follow in the Buchanan Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Ronnie Taylor, Roy Williams, Jimmy Norton, Bernard Whitton, Donnie Rainey, Jimmy Fox and Robert Weaver. Hutcheson''s Memorial Chapel & Crematory of Buchanan is in charge of the arrangements.
