Curtis McDougald Obituary

Mr. Curtis McDougald, age 96 of Buchanan, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022.  He was born on December 3, 1925 in Jackson County, GA, one of eleven children to the late Eddie Hogan McDougald and Floyd Jackson McDougald.  In addition to his parents, Curtis is preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Sosebee, Runelle Nelms, and Agnes Yvonne McDougald; and four brothers, Marion "Duck" McDougald, Paul Jackson McDougald, Clifford "Buddy" McDougald, and Floyd "Junior" McDougald.

Mr. McDougald proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, enlisting on May 25, 1944, and receiving an honorable discharge on May 16, 1946.  He served with the 37th Division in the Philippine Islands during the Southern Philippines and Luzon campaigns as an ammunition bearer and a gunner..  He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; The Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star; World War II Victory Medal; Combat infantryman Badge and The Good Conduct Medal.  During his service he qualified as a rifle sharpshooter.  After leaving the military, he worked as a Bridge Superintendent with Tidwell Construction out of Douglasville that built many bridges in Georgia.  He also helped build the First Congregational Holiness Church in Monroe, GA, where he also became a member. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish, and garden.  He also loved telling jokes, even though he may have been the only one who thought they were funny.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Debbie Fincher of Buchanan; sons, Curtis McDougald of Kennesaw, and Harold McDougald of Gainesville; sisters, Lunette Stover of Gainesville, Dora Mae Murphy of Gainesville, and Shirley McKinney of Johns Creek; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be hosted by the family in the spring. A special thanks goes to his caretaker for the last ten years, Susan Heard.

Cremation services have been entrusted to Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel & Crematory of Buchanan.
